There are a lot of important decisions involved in putting together a balanced and healthy diet. Most of the time, this involves understanding what and what not to eat. There are, of course, two other key factors: how often and how much!
Most of us have been in the routine of taking meals in threes for a long time. However, there are a few reasons why it can be a good idea to think twice about this habit. Firstly, going for long stretches of time without eating can produce feelings of hunger that may lead you to binge, which is never a good idea. Secondly, more frequent meals have been shown to increase your resting metabolic rate, which means the right amount of healthy snacking can actually help you lose weight rather than gain it. One of the most common figures to use for this approach is to eat every two to three hours.
Switching from a three-meal plan to two to three hour intervals shouldn’t have an effect on the number of calories you should be consuming based on your body and dietary needs. This should stay the same, not to mention the amounts of specific nutrients you need. Whether you’ve already committed to a gram of protein per pound of body weight, or a goal of between 2,000 and 3,000 calories per day, be sure to keep most of your daily numbers where they are if you’re adjusting to more frequent snacking. In short, don’t binge and don’t starve yourself either!
Things to Keep in Mind
Of course, if you’re planning on eating smaller, more frequent meals, the usual considerations apply in terms of what exactly you’re eating and what it’s made of. No system is a substitute for truly healthy items! Avoid items containing saturated and trans fats as well as refined carbs, and stay away from heavily processed items as much as possible. If you can maintain your resting metabolic rate with routine healthy snacking and keep your exercise routine on track (not to mention complement your workouts with proper refuelling), staying in shape will become a whole lot easier!
