The holidays are a great time to enjoy the company of friends and family. With all that food around, however, it’s also one of the most difficult times of year to maintain healthy diet and exercise! Here are a few pointers to keep you on track throughout the season.

Maintaining Your Momentum

Whether it’s large portions of unhealthy party food or lots of time in front of the TV, there are plenty of temptations that can get you out of your groove. One way to dodge these pitfalls is to consider all the hard work you’ve done during the year to stay in shape and feeling great. If you overindulge during the holidays, it’ll be all the more difficult to get back into the swing once the new year starts. If you can avoid this altogether, not to mention the accompanying guilt, you’ll thank yourself later!

Positive Moderation

During this time it’s very important to stay smart about your portions. Make responsible selections of only your favourite items and leave the rest out. This is a great way to enjoy yourself and moderate simultaneously. Be strategic about how you pace yourself as well. Have a small fruit or veggie-based snack leading up to a big meal so that you will feel satisfied earlier on. When you’re in the midst of that feast, keep an eye on your plate to know what and how much you’ve eaten. Those visual cues can actually be more powerful than how full we feel.

Stress Management

Few things can be more stressful than navigating a busy shopping mall for last-minute gift-buying or getting that family gathering to go according to plan. All that bustling around may seem like a good form of exercise, but this doesn’t really cut it! The stress usually does more harm than the activity does good, especially once you’re at home later on and more likely to overindulge. Modify your regular exercise routine so that it will fit comfortably into your holiday to-do list rather than feeling like an obligation. Combine this with a consistent sleep schedule, not to mention quality time with loved ones, and you’re on your way to a healthy holiday!
