What’s the Deal with Superfoods?

What’s the Deal with Superfoods? - Vitality Fitness - Bootcamp Calgary

Unless you’re living under a rock (in which case you wouldn’t be reading this), you probably have heard the term “superfood” being thrown around quite a lot. But what actually is a superfood and how will it benefit you? Before you start filling your cupboards with blueberries and wheatgrass, here are some things that you need to know.

What is a Superfood?

In today’s world, processed foods are cheap and easy to access. As a result, our bodies are missing out on a lot of nutrients that we need in order to be healthy. Superfoods are simply whole foods that fill the nutritional void in our modern diet. Think of your body like a motor vehicle. No matter how good a car may look on the lot, you won’t get far if all the parts inside aren’t working smoothly. Superfoods are a great way to give your body the fuel it requires. By consuming nutrients in proper amounts, you can help your body fight off disease and even deter signs of aging.

What is Not a Superfood?

With all of the hype around these nutrient-dense foods, it’s important to parse the fact from the myth. “Superfood” is not a food group, nor is it recognized as a scientific term. As such, superfoods won’t magically cure any ailments you have or eliminate the need for you to exercise. Throwing a handful of kale into a chocolate milkshake every once in a while isn’t going to help you shed those extra pounds. These foods work in addition to healthy nutrition and regular fitness, whatever that may look like for you.

How Can I Integrate Superfoods into My Diet?

  • Like anything to do with your health, consistency is key. Create a habit out of choosing nutrient-dense foods for your table.
  • Variety is the spice of life. It’s also the key to nutritional success. Don’t stick to one or two healthy foods on top of a poor diet. Indulge in a wide variety of healthy foods. Not only will it keep you from getting bored, but it will ensure that you are getting all types of nutrients.
  • Do your research. Just because the label says it’s a superfood, doesn’t mean that it will actually benefit you. Be a smart consumer and get informed about what you’re putting in your body.

Here at Vitality Fitness, we know that knowledge is power. That’s why we offer a multitude of services including nutrition coaching to help you on your fitness journey. We can help answer any questions you may have about superfoods and keep you informed every step of the way!
